苏州博物馆西馆设有通史陈列馆、苏作工艺馆、多媒体展示馆等多个展区，从文化艺术、苏作技艺、苏式生活等多个方面全面展示了吴地的悠久历史和特色工艺。在立足江南文化的基础上，苏州博物馆西馆还专设国际合作馆，与世界知名博物馆合作，积极探索世界多元文化的链接与融合。

苏州博物馆西馆更加注重和突出博物馆教育功能，首次尝试在国内地方综合类博物馆内设置探索体验馆，为青少年观众打造国内首家博物馆学校，让他们在开放式、互动式和探索式的体验中了解苏州城，放眼看世界。
苏作工艺馆位于苏州博物馆西馆地上二层，展厅面积2280平方米，展示从宋元至现当代前后一千年间的苏作精品。展览共展出文物900件/套，重点文物150件/套，包括玉雕、竹刻、苏绣、桃花坞木版年画等传统工艺。展览旨在揭示苏作工艺的辉煌成就，苏作工艺、苏式文化在中国传统文化和艺术发展中的关键作用。
